5 things to remember when designing your minimalist property.

Minimalism grew in popularity throughout 2023 as it offers a highly purified, uncluttered look. This creates a more relaxed space and can induce more creativity in the occupants.

Minimalism is said to originate in New York in the late 50s, early 60s. It was first represented in Music and visual arts and then transitioned into the personal spaces of individuals globally. It was seen as abstract and really saw traction through the 60s with artists such as Rosemarie Castoro, Anthony Caro, Mary Corse and Robert Smithson to name a few.

Designing a minimalist property involves creating a space that is simple, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. Here are the five things to remember when working on a minimalist design:

1. Simplicity and Functionality:

- Keep the design simple and avoid unnecessary embellishments or clutter.

- Prioritize functionality by focusing on essential elements that serve a purpose in the space.

- Choose furniture and décor items with clean lines and a purposeful design.

2. Neutral Colour Palette:

- Opt for a neutral colour scheme, such as whites, greys, and earth tones.

- Use a limited colour palette to maintain a cohesive and calming atmosphere.

- Introduce pops of colour sparingly to add visual interest without overwhelming the space.

3. Declutter and Organize:

- Emphasize the importance of decluttering to maintain a clean and open space.

- Invest in ample storage solutions to keep belongings out of sight and maintain a tidy environment.

- Regularly assess items in the space and remove unnecessary or unused items.

4. Quality Over Quantity:

- Select high-quality, well-crafted furniture and materials over a surplus of cheaper alternatives.

- Invest in durable and timeless pieces that contribute to the overall aesthetic of the space.

- Prioritize the quality of materials used in construction to ensure longevity.

5. Natural Light and Open Spaces:

- Maximize natural light by incorporating large windows and avoiding heavy window treatments.

- Opt for an open floor plan to create a sense of spaciousness and flow between rooms.

- Consider the layout and orientation of the property to optimize the use of natural light throughout the day.

Remember that the key to a successful minimalist design is to create a harmonious and balanced environment while eliminating unnecessary elements.

Each element in the space should serve a purpose and contribute to the overall functionality and aesthetics of the property.
